Description

A picture of one of my favourite nishikigoi (koi), an asagi!

I think this has been the best picture I've taken so far of the asagi!

The story of this fish has been one of almost-serendipidity! I first saw this fish in the "rejects" section of the koi shop my family was visiting. At that time, the owner of the shop told us that all the koi in that section were koi that were unwanted by their owners and were put up for sale at almost a pittance! Because they were also neglected by the shop owner, the fishes in that section were in a real sorry state, with poor scale colouration and some were even infested with lice! However, I still remember thinking at that time that if I were to buy any fish at all from that section, I would choose that asagi. As my family was looking for a large, healthy koi to "lead" the other smaller koi in our pond, it wasn't surprising that we didn't buy any fish from that section.

A week later, my uncle rang us to tell us that he had managed to find the "leader" my family was looking for! And when he arrived with the fish, lo and behold it was the very same asagi that we saw in the shop! It was in a real bad shape, underfed, undercoloured and infested with lice to boot! However, my dad decided to give it a chance and we began treating the lice infestations with salt baths and gave it ample koi feed. The lice infestation was soon eradicated and the asagi now almost looks good enough to be entered in koi shows! And two years on, it's now the "leader" of our pond, leading the other smaller koi to be hand-fed by my family!

What a lovely Hi Asagi and a heartwaring story. Its comforting to know that you can see their inner beauty despite their exterior. I, too, have a koi pond with many imported Japanese koi and a handful of "rejects" (the unwanted and handicapped).

Your story reminds me of a very minimal sanke I adopted about 8-9 months ago [link] Her previous owners dropped her off at my local koi shop because they were unable to care for her needs as a growing koi (she was 15 inches at the time). She wasn't in the greatest shape because her previous owners did not feed her enough making her head look huge compared to her body. Since I've had her, she's put on weight and is the leader of my pond.
